By teasing out parallels—the incontestable and risible similarity in hue and texture of the dog’s fur, the client’s hair, and the fringe of Madame Toilette’s dress—a possible truth is presented: no life in whatever form is any more or less strange or ridiculous, no one activity any more or less likely to provide meaning to a life.
